Description

The Volume 10 pencil is a tribute to the reporter who came to define investigative journalism in the modern era. Nellie Bly was yet unknown when she was tasked with investigating Blackwell’s Island—an infamous New York insane asylum. In order to gain the access she needed to do such reporting, she got herself committed to the facility for ten days.

What resulted was her seminal piece: “Ten Days in a Madhouse” published in 1887. It uncovered the brutal conditions patients were being subjected to and threw light on the misconceptions surrounding mental illness at that time. Her piece became one of our most iconic examples of investigative journalism and paved the way for reporting as we know it today.

This special edition pencil features a matte grey “newsprint” finish, dark grey imprint, silver ferrule, and dark grey eraser. Its extra-firm graphite is ideal for capturing notes as a reporter might. The number 10 represents the ten days spent at Blackwell’s Island. Replacement erasers are available in a variety of colors. Each sturdy and beautifully designed box includes one dozen pencils.
