Description
In late summer of 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th Amendment. After many decades of lobbying, marching, and protesting, it was declared constitutionally illegal to deny anyone the right to vote on the basis of sex. Although this was a massive step forward, it had its limitations. Black, Indigenous, Asian and Latina women continued to be repressed, often in violent terms. Even after the Voting Rights Act of 1965 attempted to eliminate these barriers, gerrymandering and other voter suppression techniques continue to threaten all Americans’ right of enfranchisement.
Blackwing’s Volume XIX is a tribute to the centennial celebration of the 19th Amendment, with all its limitations, and the ongoing fight for voting rights. The pencil features firm graphite, a hexagonal barrel, purple finish, striped silver ferrule, purple eraser, and three-sided white and golden yellow imprint inspired by the suffrage flag. The 36 yellow stars represent the 36 states that ratified the amendment. Replacement erasers are available in a variety of colors. Each sturdy and beautifully designed box includes one dozen pencils.
